What is the maximum size for mixing an epoxy batch?
Our recommendations for batch size are based on the type of epoxy and coating the you're measuring for.
For Primaloc Bar & Table Top Epoxy:
Table top epoxies like our Primaloc Bar & Table Top Epoxy tend to cure faster, due to their higher viscosity and lower heat dispersion compared to other epoxy resins.
Seal Coat Batch Size Recommendations
For seal coats, we recommend mixing no more than 16 oz. of hardener with 16 oz. of resin per batch. A smaller batch of 8 fl oz of hardener with 8 fl oz of resin is a good place to start for beginners. You can mix another batch when you run out in the container. The reason for limiting your seal coat batch is tied to the working time of epoxy. Because a seal coat batch is manually applied, it can take much longer to full use up the batch. In turn, if the batch is too big, it may begin curing in the container before you're finish with it.
Flood Coat Batch Size Recommendations
For flood coats, we recommend mixing no more then 1/2 gal. of hardener with 1/2 gal. of resin per batch. A smaller batch can be made as long as the mixture of resin to hardener is 1:1.
NEVER mix up more than 1/2 gal. hardener with 1/2 gal. of resin at a time as it will not blend properly, and you will end up with sticky or gooey epoxy that will be unable to cure.
Note: If you are mixing a smaller amount of epoxy such as 1 qt. hardener with 1 qt. resin, you will need to mix that by hand for 4 minutes to avoid over mixing. To avoid inducing air bubbles, a power drill (and accompanying drill bit) should only be used for full gallon-sized batches.
For Primaloc Deep Pour Epoxy:
Primaloc Deep Pour Epoxy has a significantly longer working time than table top epoxies. As such, larger batches without the increased risk of blemishes are feasible.
Seal Coat Batch Size Recommendations
Primaloc Deep Pour Epoxy is not intended for seal coats; for that, use the Bar & Table Top Epoxy.
Flood Coat Batch Size Recommendations
The maximum flood coat batch size for Primaloc Deep Pour Epoxy is 192 oz combined. Because Deep Pour uses a 2:1 ratio of resin to hardener, this equates to 128 oz. of resin and 64 oz. of hardener.
